The Lady Gouldian Finch (Erythrura gouldiae), also known as the Gouldian Finch, Gould’s Finch, or Rainbow Finch, is one of Australia’s most colorful finches. The Blue-back Gouldian is especially attractive because of its beautiful blue coloration and vibrant head markings.
At Aviora Haven, we offer Lady Gouldian Finches for bird enthusiasts who appreciate their stunning appearance and fascinating behavior. These delicate finches are best suited to owners who can provide a calm, stable, and well-maintained aviary environment.
Gouldian Finches are known for their striking combination of colors. Depending on the mutation and head color, they may display shades of blue, green, yellow, red, black, and purple.
Both males and females are colorful, although females are generally less intense in coloration than males.
Blue-back Gouldians are a popular color variation and can make a beautiful addition to a planted aviary.
Please note: Color combinations can vary from bird to bird. If you have a preferred mutation or head color, mention your preference in the comments section of your order. We will do our best to accommodate your request, but exact color combinations cannot always be guaranteed.
The Lady Gouldian Finch is native to Northern Australia. In its natural habitat, it is associated with open woodland and areas where suitable food and water are available.
Gouldian Finches are excellent aviary birds and appreciate spacious environments with safe plants, branches, and areas where they can move and forage naturally.
An adult Lady Gouldian Finch is approximately 5.5 inches long and weighs around 16–17 grams.
With proper care, Gouldian Finches can live for up to 10 years.
Gouldian Finches have soft and pleasant vocalizations. Their calls help birds communicate with one another throughout the day.

Blue-back Gouldians can sometimes be difficult to sex visually, particularly when their coloration makes the differences between males and females less obvious.
If you are purchasing Gouldians for breeding and need specific genders, DNA testing is recommended.
Gender cannot always be guaranteed for Blue-back Gouldians without testing.
If a gender option is not available for a particular bird, DNA testing can be requested to determine the bird’s sex.
DNA testing is an additional $149 per bird and may add approximately 3–6 or more weeks to the estimated delivery time while the results are obtained.
Please see our FAQs for additional information about DNA testing.
Lady Gouldian Finches are primarily watching birds rather than hands-on pets. They generally do not enjoy being handled and can become highly stressed when restrained.
Because Gouldians are sensitive birds, minimizing unnecessary handling is important. They are best enjoyed through observation in a peaceful and secure aviary.
For this reason, Lady Gouldian Finches are not generally recommended for beginner bird keepers who are looking for a bird they can regularly handle.
A spacious, clean, and secure aviary is ideal for Gouldian Finches. They benefit from room to fly, safe perches, suitable foliage, and areas where they can feel secure.
Because they can be sensitive to stress, avoid unnecessary disturbances and provide a stable daily routine.
Gouldian Finches naturally build nests in tree holes, often near sources of water. In captivity, they can be provided with a wooden nest box or covered nesting basket.
A typical clutch contains approximately 4–8 eggs. Both parents participate in caring for the young.
Gouldian chicks generally leave the nest at around 19–23 days and become independent at approximately 40 days.
Gouldians should be at least one year old before breeding.
They are not always strong nest builders, so providing suitable nesting material can help encourage successful nesting.
A nutritious and varied diet is essential for maintaining healthy Gouldian Finches. Suitable foods can include:
Fresh, clean drinking water should always be available.
If you have a preferred Gouldian mutation or head color, please include your request with your order.
At Aviora Haven, we will make every reasonable effort to provide the color combination you prefer. However, availability and natural variation mean that an exact color combination cannot always be guaranteed.
We appreciate your flexibility and understanding.
The Blue-back Lady Gouldian Finch is a stunning choice for experienced bird enthusiasts who appreciate colorful, delicate aviary birds.
At Aviora Haven, we encourage prospective owners to provide Gouldians with a calm environment, appropriate nutrition, spacious housing, and attentive care.
With the right environment and responsible care, these beautiful Australian finches can be a wonderful addition to a well-maintained aviary.
